Twas the night before Earth Day...

Updated: Apr 30, 2021

What do you typically think of when it comes to Earth Day? If you're anything like me you think about planting trees and how you *really* need to start recycling... Which are all good things! BUT I bet you don't know much about the history of Earth Day or what you can do to contribute from the comfort of your own home, so in honor of our Earth Day Eve Picnic we thought that we would share some facts and tips!

The first Earth day was April 22nd, 1970 following the "hippie" era of new thinkers! Just around 20 million people marched the streets nationwide to protest industrialization and promote greener habits. And as a result, President Richard Nixon approved The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that same year! It was declared an international holiday almost forty years later in 2009 by the UN, and they officially named it International Mother Earth Day. And here we are today, with a new generation of fresh, young faces who are striving to make the world a better place!

Every year since, people have been doing remarkable things to celebrate the Earth and "going green". For instance, on Earth Day 2012, more than 100,000 people in China rode their bikes in order to reduce CO2 emissions and showcase the amount of pollution that cars create. Then on Earth Day 2011, there was a "Plant Trees Not Bombs" campaign where 28 million trees were planted in Afghanistan!

So what can you do to help? Luckily we are living in a more sustainable generation that has provided us with easier access to "Go Green!"

Here's just a few ideas:

We also thought we would show off our picnic! We had a great time seeing and serving our wonderful residents and being able to hang back and enjoy time outside in the hammock garden together! Thank you for coming and grabbing a bite with us, and if you missed it, don't worry! We have a lot of exciting events coming up in May!
